I am wanting to buy a Diesel Excursion. I understand that the 7.3 in 2003 was the best engine and in 2003 Ford came out with the 6.0 mid year. I know there were many problems but Ford has identified the problem and has fixed it. I am looking at buying a 2003 with the 6.0 diesel that was a buy back from Ford. The Ford dealer said that Ford bought it back after so many problems (lemon law), has completely refurbished it, and is selling it with a 1 year extended bumper to bumper warranty. The miles are low, and the prices is what I want to pay. Would you buy it? What should I look for? I have not seen the problem list yet, but I spoke to the salesman and he said that it was same problem that Ford had with many of these engines. What that is, I don't know yet. Any advice would be great. Thanks for any help
I just bought a 2001 with the V-10. I did this for two reasons 1) the 7.3 I wanted was impossible to find in my price range and 2) my buddy who is a Ford tech with years of knowledge and experience told me to never ever get involved with the 6.0 as its track history sucks. Lots of people here will disagree with me but 3 out of every 4 times I see my buddy at work he is fixing a 6.0. Since Ford admits yours has had past issues I'd leave that one be and keep looking. Just my opinion.

There are so many excursions out there , over 10000 just on cars.com
Find a few you really like and bring the vin# to this site and some very good people
here can tell you alot about the vehicles.
I had been looking every day for a month and found one yesterday , don't let the location scare you, they can transport pretty cheap.
get a list of what was wrong with it and what they did to fix it. The engine will still carry the 100k mile warranty. I turned our 2003 in for a drive line vibration not for the 6.0L never have had an issue with our past or present 6.0L and I'd buy another one. Don't be scared of them the problems have all but been figured out now.
I purchased a 2003 X with the 6.0 over a year ago, and have to say its the best vehicle I have ever owned. With five kids, we turned in our E350 full size van for the with the V10 for the X. I had allready heard all the horror stories but knew ford had figured it out. I got an Oasis report which stated the turbo had been replaced at 15,000 and the computer had the latest flash while at the dealer. We make several trips to Montana ever year from Californa and wanted better mileage than the V10. After a year, the only thing I had to replace was the batteries. It has been a great vehicle. I would just ask them to throw in an extended waranty (more than the year) and have an independent diesel mechanic look at it. Just my 2 cents.
Try to talk them into a 3/36 bumper to bumper, see if you can buy it if they wont throw it in. I got the 3/36 ford bumper to bumper for just under 3K on my 03 V10, i kinda got raped, but its good at any ford dealer i teh country and i like taking road trips so i threw it on.
If its gonna have any real problems itll happen in the 3/36 warranty time period id imagine.
I too have an '03 6.0 that was a corporate leased vehicle. I did an Oasis report and found nothing much had been replaced before I purchased it. I gotta tell ya, I really like this truck. It meets every expectation and actually exceeds in most areas. There was a lot of bad press on these trucks, but more than that, a lot of satisfied customers as well.
There was an earlier thread on this forum regarding the '03 6.0's that covered this topic. Most agreed the bad press was merely over-reaction. The early '03's had some minor problems, but like everything new, those were addressed quickly.
Take the advice given above, because I have learned from this forum, truth speaks loudest. Good luck in your decision.

Reason: spelling snafu
go for the diesel not the 10v . The v10 sucks too much gas in my eyes and right now in california gas is 50 cents more than diesel. always go for the diesel.
I looked at both a '03 and '04 6.0L X buyback from California. Both were priced about 5K to 6K below what I could find an equivalent non-buyback vehicle for after dealer thrashing. The bonus, of course, is the 1 year B2B warranty.
I ended up buying the '04 and have put about 5K on the vehicle since January. I've had no problems whatsoever except that the air conditioning is out. I looked at the Oasis report and didn't see things that would make me cringe... oil leaks, etc. It did have the injectors replaced and the turbo replaced. So far I'd do it again as the 5-6K I saved can repair the vehicle a few times once out of warranty.
Also, California has really strong consumer protection laws allowing buybacks for just about anything. Just check out the Oasis and make sure your comfortable with what you see.
Im surprised diesel is 50 cents less a gallon in commiefornia (sorry but i hate your state and the laws that originate from there) because diesel is about .10-.20 cents MORE a gallon around chicago and about a 1-200 miles in any direction from us.
I bought it! As of right now, we are very happy with it. It has 52,400k on it and I bought it for $25k. The dealer was good, put on new tires for me and replaced the wireless headphones. I do have a tendency to keep looking down at instrument panel to see if the engine light to pop on. Hopefully that "lemon" feeling will go away! The good news is that I do have the opportunity if something happens (injector, power train issue) in my 1st year to qualify for the lemon law. The law states that used vehicle qualify for the lemon law. I hope I don’t have to worry about. In regards to Diesel, I filled up today and paid $3.19 for diesel and gas was $3.60 (<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">San Diego</st1lace></st1:City> area). <o></o>
