I am trying to get the drums off my axle, I have been trying to back the brakes off from the drums but I cant get the gear behind the rubber plug to move at all. Usually there is an bar/lever that you have to move out of the way to get it to go but I dont see one on either side or have enought room to get a screw driver inside. I tried to get the drums a good whack with a hammer on the wheel flange side that didnt seem to help. Any tips?
The drums are swedged to the hubs. So you need to disassemble the front wheel bearings to remove them. I have ran into a couple that would come apart separately, but they weren't made that way.
To back the brake off, you need to push the self adjuster arm toward the drum so that the adjuster will turn. Use a flashlight to look into the adjuster hole. You should see the arm behind the star wheel adjuster. Should be able to push it with a small screwdriver and still have room for the adjuster tool.
Turning the wheel up will tighten the brakes. The self adjusters work to turn them that way. From the adjuster hole side, you want to catch the wheel from the top and pry it towards the bottom with the self adjuster pushed away from the wheel.
