Make sure your tech is exploring other options in the removal of the shell that is stuck in there! I got mine out with a lot of determination and the right tools...there is plenty posted on these forums directed at this problem. Dont just buy into his 2,600 dollar deal. Have some of your local mechanics look at it and see if they have the tools and the know how first.
My 2 cents
Thanks a lot for your 2 cents, the only problem is that I am at work 1,300 miles away, so most of it has been on the phone. Kind of backed into a corner.
I must of got lucky ,,recently helped a friend change plugs on his 01(125,000 miles) .After removing the coils and losing the plugs we squirted PB BLASTER in the holes and let in soak for a couple of hours .The plugs came out fairly easy.We did put anti-seeze back on for easier changing the next time.
The 01 did not have these particular plugs that are the problem. In 04 when the 5.4 went 3 valve there was not enough room in the combustion chamber for a standard plug so they had to make a goofy plug with a long narrow shell to reach down in the head between all the valves. but they forgot to make that a one piece assembly and the 2 seperate when removing. sometimes

That sucks maybe a friend or relative could get it somewhere for you. Just seems like a heck of lot money. If the right guy does this you might be looking at 200.-300. most for this job.
All I know is it's a hell of deal when you gotta start saving for a spark plug change instead of retirement when you buy one of these trucks! My 06 is nearing 40K and I'm still torn between paying them now or paying them later (them being the dealer). i guess I keep hoping before I hit 100K enough other trucks will have got there and Ford will at last step up and issue a recall of some sort. I know it's blue sky but a guy can hope!
Next best step is to find a shop in Texas or Louisiana where they have a track record of successful changes with no problems. I'll spend the money to overnight out of state if it means not having the nightmares I've read about here.
Picked my truck up this eve, the dealer had no real trouble changing the plugs at 65,500. Two required extra soaking but came out with no problem. they followed the TSB and took their time. The tips still looked new and the gap was fine. The mechanic said it would have been fine to go to 100,000. I really think using a tier one fuel is an important factor. They have broken one plug on one vehicle. It had 95,000 on it and did a lot of idleing, an oil field truck.

Good for you, they could not get the electrode out so they are in the process of pulling the head off and cleaning it. Will have to bite the bullet now.

That really sucks, I was waiting for the dreaded phone call on mine. Hate you are having to deal with that.

After it's overwith, you need to contact Ford customer service and let them know what you think, and that you nor anyone you can influence will ever buy another Ford product. I did this with a Chevy truck on their emergency brake problem and GM sent me the cost of the repair.

Much appreciated, I will let them know for sure, I have pulled a lot of spark plugs and never had a problem with them. Now pulling 3V Ford's heads are a different story, if you know what I mean.
