I have an '86 Bronco with the 351W HO. It has a lot of trouble with cold starts. I have to warm it up 5 to 10min sometimes to make sure it doesn't stall in park. Then it still might stall when in gear if it is not warmed up all the way. The classic mechanic response it that the engine in just old. I'm looking at rebuilding it soon, but am wondering if there is anything else that could cause this problem. It's an automatic transmission and carbourated.
sounds like choke to me might be to tight.
im guessing you have a electric choke, and i also had a problem with a cold start, and mine took for ever to warm up so i adusted the choke by bending the linkage from the choke to the flap since the choke has a locked in adustment, and i also replaced the diaphram in the carb, pull down behind the choke, and it was busted, so now mine works fine, good luck.

It could be a low float level or anything. But I think it can also be caused by a lot of build up on your valves. I could be wrong but I think thats what was wrong with one of my old 302's. Some one had used really bad oil for a long time and the whole inside of the engine was caked with really thick sludge and crap. The engine was extremely hard to start and would not run in gear most of the time.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
I had the same problem on my 85 351HO, turned out that the linkage to the butterfly from the choke had come out, leaving the butterfly down and suffocating the engine. It would start great, but die when I put it in gear. Eventually had to replace the choke, just wasn't working anymore, doesn't have any start problems anymore.
