Quite honestly the ga mileage on my 1996 F250 v8-460 is not much worse than the milage I used to get in the 1997 F150 v8-4.9L Triton that I traded for it:
1996 F250 V8-7.5L EFI: 11 MPG on 87 octane
1997 F150 V8-4.6L EFI: 14 MPG on 91 octane (had to use high-test or it ping'd)
So what is the best bang for my buck to get better mileage on this big block V8??
That's about the best a 460 will ever get. They were a 10mpg loaded, or unloaded beast. If you're 4.6 was doing that bad there was something seriously wrong with it.
Not really, it'll sound better and may have better power off the line, but the mileage will be right around 10mpg. If it was carbed you could run really hot plugs, advance the timing and lean it way out and you might be able to get 15 out of if. But it's EFI and as such the computer does all the work. Replace the o2 sensors, and clean the EGR valve. That might yield another 1mpg.
Wow that milage sucks. I just bought a 1992 F150 ext cab 4x4. Apparently it has a 351 in it but I havn't got the truck yet to check. What can I expect to get for milage in it? And how can I improve it? What about all these performance chips and changing computer programs for your 460?
Luckily, my 96 F250 with the 460 will not be my daily driver for long... I got it to pull a trailer, which is what I will use it for. I need a commuter car too. Honda Civic would not be a bad idea, if it were AWD.... I need it since I live on a mountain here in Colorado.
