Heres the problem: I parked my 2wd '90 f-150 with the 5.0L and auto. trans. with OD. When I parked it every thing was worked and didn't make any noise. When I started it up and put it into reverse it would drive forward same thing with neutral and drive. So I put it back in park and tried shifting it several times and it would always drive forward. I checked linkage and fluid both looked good. When I put it back in park I gave it some gas and the RPMs wouldn't go over 1000. So I stomped on it heard it pop and then rev up. Now all the gears work correctly but it grinds when I accelerate. So Im guessing the transmission is on its way out. I haven't looked at it but my dad says its transmission code is E. What transmission is it?
Per the door sticker decoder it is an E40D trans. You can find that up top in "articles and specs". I can't be much more help but someone here will give you some ideas and things to check.
I'm doubting that it's the E4OD--I don't think that was put behind the 5.0 in '90, in fact, I don't believe that tranny was put in Ford trucks behind the 5.0 until '91 or '92. I'd bet that your door code says 'T', which is the AOD. Another way to tell is that the AOD is TV-cable controlled, no electronics. The shift pattern above the column is P R N (D) D 1. E4OD's shift pattern is P R N D 2 1, and has an OD cancel button (on the dash pre '92, on the shift lever '92+).
If you do have the AOD, TV-cable adjustment is CRITICAL. The shift linkage also needs to be correct.

jroehl....I have the "T" code and the shift indicator with 2 "D"'s...so I have an AOD per you.
TV cable is for the down****ing of the tranny....am I correct? In other words.....If I can floor mine at 40-50 and it kicks down and starts really rolling....I'm in ok shape on the TV adjustment?
Not trying to hijack here....just wondering for myownself.
tv cable controls pressure in tranny, controlling the upshift and downshift.
i'm betting the problem with the truck sitting is the clutches froze up. i would drain fluid and change filter, then run an additive in the tranny made for ones that have been sitting for a long time.
I don't recall the procedure for adjusting the TV cable, but just because it downshifts when you floor it doesn't mean it's right. You can check the Articles and Specs section at the top of this page, there may be an adjustment procedure in there. As for the shift linkage, the Haynes manual has a good run-down on how to get that right.
Jonathandennell: The tranny is not in the VIN, it's on the door sticker under "TR" or "TRANS". You definitely have the E4OD from what you describe, though, so you should have an 'E' in that slot.
The truck sat for only 1 hour max. I don't think the clutches would freeze up on me after an hour, would it? It has the P R N D 2 1 and an OD cancel button on the dash. It grinds real good when you start from a stop or if you get over 2000 rpms. I think Im going to drive it around the block and see if it seizes up on me.
If you're grinding then my first instinct tells me theres a problem in your torque converter. I'm not super familiar with auto trannies but isn't the TC the part that controls the engagement of gears (much like a clutch on a standard tranny)? If you're grinding then it sounds like your clutch (TC) isn't fully engaged, no?
Either way, I would definitely give it a full fluid and filter change before you drive it ANY MORE. Drain the TC and drop the pan. Clean the pan and magnet with brakleen and change the filter. Replace all parts and fill with ATF (I believe Mercon III) Don't use Mercon V even though some will tell you its okay. The E4OD is very sensitive to the friction modifiers that are in Mercon V.

its maybe a 4r70w thats what is in mine. its hard to tell the diff. on aode & 4r70w
except the tailshaft bushing is smaller on aode. if its a 4r70w on the tailshaft housing
there will be a w on the side of housing. meaning wide ratio.
