speedo cable lube
I found a like new speedo cable for my 77. It had a little rust on the drive cable that I cleaned up with WD-40. What would be the best lube to use?
Graphite?
White grease spray?

I have used white grease and "penetrating oil", which is just graphite in a kerosine or other solvent carrier. I would use a little heavy oil if I had nothing else. I would not use WD-40 as it is not a lubricant, although it has a lot of other uses, including cleaning off any residue of old hard grease.

If you remove an old cable from an old housing you stand a chance of damaging it or the housing (been there, done that). You can buy a grease fitting that fits Ford speedo cables (NAPA has them) and inject blue wheel bearing grease into the housing and squish it out the other end. I suppose you can use any grease mention aboved with your gun, I just happen to always use blue wheel bearing grease.
Do not use a (pink) poly lube, basically turns to a wax when exposed to water. I wrecked a balljoint using that stuff.

I like the spray on chain lubes with a cable fitting sounds like what the other guy mentioned. I got my cable fitting from a Yammaha dealer way back and it comes in mighty hadny to lube cables. Just put the fitting on, insert the spray tube and push the button on the can. When the lube squirts out the other end you are done. The cahin lubes usually have some moly in them so it lasts a long time. Watch out for some of the stickier lubes, I think a brand called power slide while being a good cahin lube, it is too sticky and may cause too much drag on the cable. Yammaha chain lbe is thin and has moly.
