90 e 250 fuel problem
Hell all,
I have a 90 e 250 with a 351 and dual tanks. The floats on both tanks are not working so I have to keep track of full/empty manually. I recently "ran out" of gas on my rear tank sooner than I expected. I filled it up and sure enough I had over 8 gallons in the tank. After filling it up I switched bak to the rear tank and soon after that it "ran out" again. Switching to the front tank always worked, so I assumed something with the rear tank and began to search here for solutions. I figured it was either the pick-up filter or the in-tank pump. Idropped the tank and pulled the assembly out. I took the pump and put it on 12v and it spun just fine. I replaced the filter and reinstalled it. It continued to fail , so I dropped the tank again and replaced the pump and the filter. After I reinstalled it, it continued to fail. It works intermittently, then will quit and I have to switch to the front tank. Is there something I am missing? I can live with just the front tank but it is a pain to fill up every couple of days. I would appreciate any input on a solution to this problem.
Thanks,
Larry

Thanks
Yes you should be able to check the Selector Switch on the Dash with a Multimeter.

Here is a diagram that should be close to what you have.

They only had the filter in it in 1986-87 and then they moved the filter towards the front.
I do not have an image of the selector valve without the filter.
Here is an image of the fuel system.

Thanks for the help. I believe the problem is solved. Here is what I did.
1st - I looked at the dash switch and decided it would be a nightmare to remove if I could not get the dash off. Getting to the switch from the firewall side seemed like it was going to be a major job. I took dome of the dash screws of and realized the jobe to remove the dash was going to be a nightmare as well. I removed the switch bezel and realized if I could pry the dash out about 1 inch I could get the switch/harness assembly out in the open. I removed the switch and it tested good on all poles. Five minutes and it was in and working fine again. Nightmare averted.
2nd - Call dealer and inquire about part. They've got two in stock. Only $124.22 each.
3rd - Decided at that price, I would go to pick-a-part and see what I could find. I found several and actually removed two. One from an 89 E250 and one from an 88 E150. Part numbers were identical so I took the one from the cleaner and lower mileage vehicle...the 88 E150. A trip to pick-a-part requires trolling. I get a couple of window switches for the E250 (intermittent failure) and a door slide handle for the wife's Aerostar. Sadly no appropriate Hondas were available for scavenge so I was only two for three. Good news is I walked for less than $8 total including admission. Gas for the trip should be about $6. $14 + my time and I am still out for less than the dealer part.
4th - Install part and hope it works. 20 minutes later and several miles on test drive and all seem to be functioning properly.
5th - Heap many thanks and gratitude on subford for his quick and correct diagnosis.
This place is excellent.....again.
