Rear window woes (rant/question)

1990 Bronco. Rear window worked great up until about a couple months ago.

First thing it started doing was the keyswitch in the tailgate stopped working. Then, a few weeks later, it making a thump-thump noise when the window was all the way or down. One day the window went down and wouldn't go back up. Thump thump thump thump.

So I had a friend come over and disassemble the tailgate for me, as I'd never tried it before and was paranoid about breaking the glass. He got the motor and regulator out and we found that the window motor had all the gears stripped off it. Chunks of gear were buried in the grease.

Got a new motor (junkyard) and went about replacing it myself now that I knew how everything worked. Got everything replaced, but encountered the common problem of - how do I reattach the window to the regulator arms with the arms all the way extended? So I removed the tailgate switch connector and shorted it out. Worked great - window went up and down with the tailgate down and I could re-attach the regulator arms. Got everything back together - all I had to do was lower the window all the way, close the gate, raise the window, pull the jumper wire and plug the switch sensor back in. Button it up, all done.

All went well - until I went to raise the glass back up. Nothing. No up, no down. The window is stuck down. I have connected the battery directly to the motor, and it does nothing. It refuses to even flinch. I got the multimeter out and discovered that the motor has power to go up, but not down. So the motor looks to be shot and it also looks as though one of the switches (it has a new dash switch from Ford) is also shot.

Of course, the window is stuck down, and the motor is entombed behind it. I cannot figure out a way to get this window up so that I can pull the motor or the keyswitch.

Any ideas? Sorry for the long post, but wanted to get all the info in one place.

The gear kit is available separately and is the same as used in the door power windows. Both Ford and autoparts stores carry the gears. If asked, you want the "late" kit which fits all cars and trucks from 1970 up. (the early kit fits 1965/69 everything)
