I'm sorry if this has already been answered in another thread.. I've looked all over and can't seem to find a solid answer. Would a 5 speed ZF transmission out of a late 80s/90s F-250/350 bolt up to 351M that currently has an NP435? i know ford used the ZF behind 460s and it was my understanding the the 351/400M had the same bellhouse bolt pattern as the 460. The reason i am asking this question is because i am interested in putting a 5.9 Cummins in a late 78 F-250 with an NP435. www.destroked.com offers and adapter plate that bolts onto the Cummins and allows you to use a "gas version" ZF transmission. So if the ZF and NP435 had the same bellhousing bolt pattern, i would assume the NP435 would bolt up to the adapter plate. I have plans of using the Ranger overdrive auxilary transmission which goes between the NP435 and the bellhousing giving you 8 forward gears and 2 reverse (and a ratio above 1:1 for highway driving) i think it would be the hot setup if it would work.. so if anyone knows more about bellhousing changes/similarities between the NP435 and ZF 5 speed, let me know! thanks
What engine a transmission will bolt to doesn't depend on the transmission, it depends on the engine.
The ZF will bolt up if it's behind a 460. However, you may want to look into the diesel version of the ZF - they made gas and diesel versions for a reason.
The NP435 bolts to a bell housing, and therefore will fit on a variety of engines if the bell has the correct trans bolt pattern, depth and the clutch can be arranged.
The ZF has an integral bell housing, so it only bolts to the sbf/300 six, or the 460, or the oil burner, depending on what bell pattern it has.
hmm i guess i should rephrase my question. i understand the NP435 bolts to a bellhousing (that's part of the reason i want to use this transmission, so i can use a Ranger overdrive auxilary box, which bolts BETWEEN the bellhousing and transmission) and i also understand that the ZF has an intergral bellhousing, and i also understand that they offered different ZF versions for the gas and diesel engine which are not only different in bellhousing bolt pattern, but also have differerent gear ratios. i guess this would be my question... would the NP435 bellhousing that bolts behind an 351/400M (which is i believe has the same bolt pattern as the 460) have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the ZF 5 speed found in later model ford trucks with the 460? ok... put it this way. could you take an NP435 (w/ the bellhousing still bolted to the transmission) out of a say...a '78 F-250 with a 351M and bolt it up to a say.. '95 F-250 with a 460?
