i agree with biggreentank, your cousin doesn't understand much about vehicles, or physics. you can move just about anything with the right gearing, or leverage. how else do you think aliens built the pyramids, moving thousand pound stone by hand. unimogs had 42" tires from factory with only a 3cy diesel turning them...all because those trucks have one h*ll of a gear reduction system. or look at a tractor with a 40hp motor turning 50+ inch tires. anyway...good luck and don't let anyone tell you something can't be done, some things just take more time, patience, sweat, and blood than others.

You Forgot one very important part of that.......Money, with enough money one can do amazing things to a truck. But in my case as like so many others I cant afford thousands of dollars all at one time to build a lifted truck. So keep chipping away at it and if you want 38s do it but just do it right it might take more time and money but at least when its done you can stand back and say I built that and thats really what customizing is all about to me at least.

HAHA! Thanks a ton guys. I figured as much about the gearing. I'd really like to snag those wheels/tires since they seem to be a pretty good deal. I live in central Iowa, so we don't have a whole lot of nasty stuff, but we go down thru some of the smaller rivers / muddy areas.

Back to the gear ratio subject.... What's the stock ratio for the front differential on an '89? Just wondering. I'm sure I'm looking at spending some money, but it'll be fun. I didn't know I got this much response. Heh, cool.

most 4wd will have a 3.50-3.55 ratio. but could be up to 4.10. if you have 3.73 or smaller numerically, you will have to replace the entire carrier to go to a higher numerically gear. there should be a code tag on the axle telling you the gear ratio, maybe it's on the door too?? not sure about that.

Starting to look at carriers for front d44 and the 8.8 in the back that will hold 4.10's. Any suggestions on good brands for this stuff? Also, I wonder if I should wait and find a bigger axle first, or can the 8.8 handle the 35's fine?

i plan on running 35's on my 8.8, but i'm not as aggressive with my 4wd as i used to be. should hold up fine as long as you aren't too rough. i had a true detroit locker in my 78 with 4.56 and 36" superswampers. i loved the detroit, never put a locker in the front, but the detroit truetrac is supposed to be a pretty good carrier for a front d44. i'm not sure you need to change the carrier for the 8.8 to go to a lower gear set, unless you are going to run a locker like the detroit.
