After seeing Guzzles site on packing needle bearings, I bought all the orings and studs for the job. Happen to talk to a auto repair shop and said I was going to do the needle bearings and the guy said I need a special tool to install the 2 big orings? Don't see anything on Guzzles site about it . Anyone know what he's talking about. Another thing I was wondering about , had the ball joints replaced at the Ford dealer last fall wouldn't they had seen anything wrong with the needle bearings at that time.
You don't need any special tools to replace the large O-rings. He must have been talking about the large axle seal. That requires a "special" tool, but if your just pulling the bearing/hub assembly you won't have to worry about that seal.

Bowstring, if the dealer did the ball joints, they were only looking at ball joints. Unless they were tearing into your hubs for a reason, usually (most dealers) they aren't going to look at anything else. Sharp maintainers will note things to bring to the owners attention....but not many anymore.
MSGTG, Racerguy has a detailed tread with pictures on this site for changing ball joints in which on the dissassembly the 4x4 auto hub and needle bearings are exposed as he works into the ball joints. After seeing that and remembering my ball joints where done late last fall I call the service department and asked about the needle bearings and was tolded that they check everything as far as seals, orings , needle bearings as long as they have it apart , hope he's not bsssing me. I know the mechanic found the connection to the hub for the vaccum lines rusted and they changed them because he said I would of been right back in no time because they would of failed soon.
