Air Conditioning Quit

The A/C quit on our Excursion yesterday while my wife was coming home from Costco. I checked the fuse and it is fine. THe heater works fine, just no cold air. How reliable is the compressor on the PSD? And any ther ideas or suggestions?

check the clutch cycle switch on the accumulator too they go out and cut off the compressor if you've pressure is good your should have 12V on both sides of the switch, could also be a stuck clutch or bad clutch coil also. I'd start there. If it was working then not more than likely it's one of the above and your compressor ( internally ) is ok.

Some sorta pressure switch went bad on mine, had the truck in for other thing sunder warrenty and tehy replaced some $5 dollar switch and its fine again. My compresor wouldnt kick on even though it had pressure in the system. Ill look for teh writeup and find out exactly what it was called, looked easy to replace and for $5 from ford just throw another on for the heck of it if your stumped lol.

1-That would be great. I had it working last night and after I shut the engine off it wouldn't come back on. So for $5.00 it would be worth a shot... Thanks again

Big yea try the clutch cycle switch / low pressure switch you can pick one up at the local parts house. Shouldn't be too much it just unscrews ad screws back on. Easy swap.

It's on the side of the accumulator ... kinda round silver or black can't remember but it's on the passenger side near the firewall has one of the large a/c hoses coming out of it. If you get a switch you'll be able to find it easily.

I just looked in my 03 v-10. Its about a foot behind the battery, mine is black and looks like a really overgrown soda can i guess lol. Has 2 aluminum lines going into the top of it. I believe it just screws into the side of it (towards the front passenger side of the big can towards the top of it). Looks like the only shiney new part on my A/C and i just had it replaced like 2 weeks ago so im guessing thats it lol. Has a typical plastic connector going to it, looks like you unclip it and just unscrew the switch and screw in a new one. There was nothing on the paperwork i got about refilling the system so it shouldnt leak any refrigerent im assuming.

If i knew thats all it was i would have done it myself but its under warranty and was in for other stuff so i just ket them fiddle with it lol. Looks very easy to do honestly.

there is a schrader core behind the switch so when you unscrew it the freon won't discharge all out.

igotoneforya there is only one compressor that runs both front and rear systems. The rear system operates off an expansion valve in the back which converts the high pressure low temp liquid back to a low pressure gas. These valves get stuck and need to be replaced. If your front is cold and the rear isn't that's probably your culprit. The system has to be evacuated to replace it.

Evacuated, that means emptying out the freon and replacing parts and refilling again? Sounds like what-about $2-300? Recommend ford for this or the local AC shop? I was going to take it to the AC guy tomorrow.

yes you are correct. If your system is still full there shouldn't be a charge for additional freon the shop will suck yours out and put it back in. You're probably close on the price. I'd go where you feel most comfortable. Just tell them you already know what's wrong with it and tell whoever what you want replaced so they don't try and slip nothing in on ya. Maybe have them replace the orfice tube for the front system while they have it empty. Just in case it's got particles in the screen.

Right, orfice tube-is that near the muffler belt?

Never heard of it, is it a filter of sorts? Man I am confused. I have not been a fan of the ford service here, but the other guy is a friend of a friend. I am sure I could get the parts and bring them to him with the truck and save a bunch of time, but the dealer has probably done it before. 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Local ford took my truck on a 14 mile test drive after looking at the drivers seat and adjusting something. Weird.
