Straight up timing?

I have a melling double roller timing chain for my 400 (1977 F150). It has a 3 position crank sprocket. 0, +4, -4. The paper work in the box said that 0 is the OEM setting. The question is...is 0 really 0 or is it factory retarded? I have gotten conflicting stories about the trucks NOT being factory retarded like the cars. Facts and advice are welcome. Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, all M engine were retarded by four degrees at the factory to meet emission requirements at that time. As for the Melling chain, I've no idea.

Compare the new chain to your old chain. You can actually see the difference in the keyway positions. If you are confused with the Melling paperwork return it for another brand. All of the 400's etc had the camshaft retarded 4° after the 1971 model year.
