I have a '99 F350, CC, 4X4, dually. Nearly all pavement travel. Tow a 5th wheel. At what mileage should I pack the front bearings and how difficult is it? I've changed the pads and the ABS sensor, and have packed the bearings on a non-4X4, but don't know about the bearings on this. Thanks......
I would inspect to make sure all of your seals are not leaking and then lube that needle bearing, when they go out, they usally will take out the axle shaft as well. Better safe than sorry on those.
Mine went out. I had a rattle in the front and got under it and noticed the axle was loose. So I pulled the hub off and the whole thing is torn up. I ended up removeing the axle till I can get the parts. The bearing for the axle was completly shot. I couldn't even tell it was a bearing, it looked more like a seal, most of the needles were gone the rest were packed in with the old dry grease. You can look at the wheel bearing and tell that it got hot. Now I just need $600 for the bearings, and new axle end and the time to fix it.
On my 99 it was just the needle bearings that were bone dry and had flat spots worn in them. The main bearing was fine thankfully. There is lots of info over in the Super Duty forum. I would pull the entire main bearing and lube the needles asap. It takes about 2hrs and all you need is a deep well 13/16" socket. Was amazed that it is used for the tire lugs, caliper bolts, and even main bearing nuts. Very cool. Spray it with PB blaster the night before though....
Thanks for the info....not exactly what I wanted to hear, but now know what I'm in for. The seals arn't leaking and don't have a problem yet. Will grease the needle bearings....Are there any schematics of what the inside of the hub looks like? Thanks again.....
