i have a old work truck that would make a sweet sleeper its a 74 ford half ton no power steering with a 4 speed and a 9in rear end and a 460 on the stand ready for a rebuild. my question is the best bang for my buck in the world of horespower. i want somthing that will pass everything but a gas station.
well best bang for the buck plain and simple is stroker, there is not substitute for cubic inches. making 5-600hp on pump gas even with iron heads is not even out of possibility in fact at 500hp level it won't even idle radical if you really looking for a sleeper to get that kind of hp at 460cid your going to have a cam that will give you away.
yeah cubic inches still rule, now adays u need to utilize the power u have now efficently. if u get one horsepower per cubic inch thats great but most arent. more inches more power. look at combo kits that performance parts places offer they have been tested an proven to give the desired numbers most of the time it is the best bang for the buck. shop round for parts do u wanna rebuild from block up with a stroker or use whatcha got now and add better stuff. its ur choice
how strong are the cranks i was going to use the stock one but some people tell me that there not the best when it comes to rpms is this true or should i upgrade?
the crank will be more than strong enough, the weak point on a stock 460 is the rods, but if you replace the rods and pistons and have the crank turned its not much more to get a stroker assembly- maybe a couple hundred dollars- and its more than worth it for the extra power
