I picked up an 88 F350 last week,7.3, 5spd. The Owner said the GP control was out of it. I checked it out and wired the GP's to a push button and they seem to be working now.
The problem is it still won't start cold without ether. I am not a big ether fan and hate to use it. I talked to the last owner and he said he had a leak repaired a while back on the IP housing.
Could the IP timing be off a tooth and cause hard cold start?
The motor runs good with no white smoke cold or hot. This is my first diesel PU. and I don't have a manual so I don't want to tear into the IP timing unless you folks think it can cause a cold start issue.
P.S. I fired it up today with a puff of ether. it was real noisy at first,I unplugged the andvance and it got quieter.
Thanks for any and all advice. Butter
Check out the 12 oclock position of the IP where it bolts onto the housing, you should see the original timing marks, (not the ones at the 2 oclock drivers side- they were done by ford after original dynamic timing, not relavant after pump and or injectors are worn- replaced). The top marks should be within the scribe width of each other. If your IP marks are towards the passange side, its advanced. From what your describing, maybe too advanced. Let us know, as it sounds like a timing issue more than anything. Oh yah, welcome to the best darn web site you'll ever come across!!
Ether can cause damage to the engine if your glow plugs are energized while applying it.
These engines are very noisy when cold by their nature. Mine downright frightens some people when I start it up in cold weather. It's not the least bit subtle.
Hard starting could just be air getting into the system. You might consider checking and replacing the o-rings in the fuel system, both on the injectors and on the filter assembly.
