Fuel Milage

Hello,
I have a 1984 F-150 w/ 351W, C6, and 3.55 rear and 235/75-15 tires. I'm getting horrible fuel milage. I've been getting around 6-7 mpg, I was wondering what suggestions anyone has.
Thanks

3.08 gears or taller tires would help. A good tune up may help too including air filter, plugs wires, cap , rotor and PCV valve.

I'm not sure if it helps (economy), but a few months ago I installed an MSD 6T ignition module, with accel cap, rotor, and wire core plug wires, with Bosch platinum +4 spark plugs.

lol Try a lighter foot on the gas. My 351w with a 2.50 rear axle will get those kind of mpg unless im soft on the gas. Not only that but if you still have the factory cats on there replace them. They are clogged and causing restrictions by now. Havent replaced mine yet but it needs it.

im pretty sure pa doesnt have emissions checks, so you could strip the emissions crap off, get a new performer 4 barrel intake and edelbrock 600 cfm carb, throw some headers and dual exhaust in there, and get 12-15 mpg highway (assuming the engine is in good shape otherwise)

So, what I'm getting for fuel milage is not considered "out of the ordinary"? Or, where would it fall compared to the "average"?

Also, last evening, I pulled one of the spak plugs to check them. It was very clean with a slightly off-white color. The plugs have been in for around 1000 miles. The engine in the truck now is a remanned' with about 20,000 miles on it. I had swapped it for the 302 that was in there.

Naw i wouldnt say your fuel economy is out of the ordinary. If its a carbed engine, your actually getting good for a carb. Their not exactly very fuel efficent.

if a carb is tuned right and size-appropriate it will get just as good of mileage as a fuel injection system... sometimes better. youre getting worse than my old truck that had a 460 in it- it got 8 mpg regardless, and it was a 4x4

A carb is inefficent. Fuel injection puts the right amout of gasoline at the right time. A carb just basicly dumps the fuel in, I can hardly say a carb engine will get better than fuel injection unless your like me and think auto makers arent putting fuel injection to its designed efficenty. Such as the 35 to 40 mpg city the newer compact cars get. I love to see a old carb engine to get that.

I'd check your distributor's vacuum advance. If it's not working your mileage will suffer. I'd say with everything running right you should be getting a solid 10mpg. Maybe a bit more.

hmm well a 4cylinder computer controlled with a 1bbl carb. Dosent sound right. Are you sure your not looking at the valve body? Cause I have a 88 year model ford with a 1.9L EFI HO engine and it dosent even get but 25 - 30 mpg city and its a 5spd manual.

there was no computer controls on that old fiesta, that was one of my favorite parts of it... it was a progressive 2 barrel weber carb. the only electronic part on it was the electronic ignition (duraspark)

That's really bad if you ask me. How does it run, good power and no black smoke, or is it a dog? What's on this truck for exhaust? Does it have the factory heat riser? What about the stupid butterfly valve in the passenger side exhaust right behind the exhaust manifold..is it still there and functioning?
