1997 Powerstroke
The other day our 1997 Powerstroke F250 4x4 would not shift into Overdrive. When manually pushing in the button and shifting, when the button was released it would shift back down and the OD light and the ABS light both started flashing. I assumed it had gone into limp mode to return home. Since our OBDII reader will not read the codes, does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Take a look at the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) sensor on top of the rear differential. It can accumulate metal shavings (normal) and send bad signals causing your symptoms. Inspect the electrical connector pins and socket for damage, bent or corrosion. This sensor is also known as RABS (Rear antilock brake sensor).
