I had a curious question. I have an idea to leave the inner fenders off of my 1977 F150. Looks as if the outer fender shell and rad support will be enough to support the hood and overall structure. It also would let me run over the frame headers in the future. Here is the question again, if you had the chance would you leave the inner fenders off or on?
Don't quite a few things mount on the inner fenders? I think you would have to fabricate new ways to mount things like the battery, wiper fluid, vacuum canister, etc.
I was going to relocate the battery to a tool box in the bed, had a good idea for a set up. I didn't think about the other items. Thanks for the input, i'll have to review my idea some more.
I have two of these trucks with fenderwell headers. If you have a body lift, you don't need to trim the inner fender at all with L&L headers and if you don't have a body lift, it only needs to be trimmed a few inches, not a big deal, I would keep the fenders
The biggest downside to removing the inner fenders is that the motor and the air cleaner will be subject to all of the road grime and water that your tires pick-up. I have had headmans fenderwell exit headers on a 78 ford f250 with no body lift. I had to cut the inner fender a little to clear the headers but not by much. If you take your time it can look stock if you use a nippler. just take your time and test fit.
The inner fenders support the hood. They are also set up to crumple in a frontal crash so that the box shape that supports the hood is not driven thru the firewall into your chest.
I did some more research and figured I needed the inner fenders. So ironicly, if i spelled it right, I found a good pair on Ebay. $20.00 for the pair and look to be in good shape. Better than the hammer riddled ones I have.
