71 Rangers c6 not engaging at first

Howdy, I have a 71 Ranger with the 360 and c6 and when I first start it up and put it in drive she just sits there. You have to rev up the engine to get her to move , once you are moving it does fine-doesn't slip at all. The fluid level is good, any thoughts? -thanks!

Well shoot... that sounds like time for a rebuild or new tranny. Any chance a flush and new fluid / filter would help? Also would a bad valve body or tourque conveter do the same? Also why does it only do it when I put it in drive for the first time of the day and after that it runs fine? -Thanks again

mine is doing the same thing, but only after sitting for a week or 2 between starting it. I think my transmission only has about 20k on it, but I work it hard with pulling a heavy trailer. Are there any issues with leaving it this way? How long will the transmission function like this? I'm planning for a zf 5 speed swap in the future but wondering if I should speed up my plans.

I've also noticed that mine doesn't do that if it's good and warmed up first.

I always made the assumption that the torque converter drained as it sat due to a failing seal and hadn't given it much thought, when I start it I just wait 30 seconds or so before putting it into gear, never is an issue if I do that.

You very well may be correct in your case, converter drain back does happen, I haven't seen it in a while probably because I work on mostly late model vehicles.

One way you can test for this is to let the vehicle sit for the amount of time it should take to cause your delay, check the fluid level before starting the engine, make a note of just where the level is on the stick, it should be high on the stick. Start the engine and allow the transmission to overcome its delay, turn the engine back off and let it sit for a bit, check the level again with engine off, if the level is a lot lower than the first reading then the converter is draining back over time. This problem is in most cases due to a worn pump,(gears, stator bushings, ect).
