I have an 83 Bronco with a 8.8 differential and was wondering if a differential from a 93 Bronco 8.8 has the same gear ratio? I want to change rearends from the 93 to my rig. Mine has continuined to loose oil from the breather tube. I have changed the oil again by adding the ford supplement. I have checked the level and it just below the plug. I just drove it about 100 miles, some interstate and some at 55 mph, the back tailgate and windows is covered in 90# gear oil. I bought my Bronco with this existing problem, thinking I could fix this, but It's been a real pain. One Ford tech told me to have it rebuilt. I have access to a 93 Eddie Bauer that has a good axel/differential. Any help is appreacated.
You need to check the gearing either manualy turn the wheel onec count the drive shft turns. Or check the id tag on the diff. or door tag. They may be the same they may not. Both 8.8 is good. Oh just thought of something, When did they put ABS on the rears??? Hopefully someone has that answer, it could further complicate things.
Yup, the 93 has ABS, why would that be a problem? The tag on mine is missing. However on My Bronco both tires spin in the "same direction", the other Bronco, does not. Where on the tag would indicate gearing? Thanks
Yous is linited slip. The other is open or a warnout limited slip. The ABS wont matter. I think that it would be ezier to change the seals than the diff's.
Most Broncos came with 3.55, but other gears were optional, especially early on. You need to check the tag, or count revolutions. Other than that, a newer 8.8 should fit on an older vehicle, while the opposite is not true.
I'm sure you will remove the diff cover to inspect & drain the old gear oil on the new diff.
When you do, compare the numbers on the ring gear to your old one.
If the ratios match your good to go!
Thanks guys, I don't know much about differentials, thats my weak area. I sure tired of the oil blowing out of the vent tube, all over by back tail gate, glass and my boat! My neighbor says the the back lash could be too tight causing the gear to heat up, and maybe foaming...I'm lost and need help with that. The rear end change from a '93 Eddie B would be a quick fix. But I'm cerious what is going on in the differential.
The axle will swap, but be SURE you have the same ratio. You also may need the driveshaft from the 93 and it may need to be shortened or lengthened because of the likely different transmission lengths. I think the mounting is different at the pinion. One is probably a flange style mount.
I would just fix what's wrong with your current axle though. It shouldn't be blowing that much oil out the vent tube. Are you sure that's where it's coming from? Could it be motor oil? Have you changed the axle seals?
