I have an '85 Ranger 2.8L V6. I have a sudden and extreme oil leak coming from what looks like where the oil filter screws up tight to the engine. Could I have possibly just blown the gasket where the filter meets the engine. I have never seen that before. I have not taken it apart yet, but was wondering if anyone else has seen this.
Did you just change the filter????
If so, I like BikerWithTruck's idea, had that happen to me once, but I caught it as I was about to clean the base to install the new filter.
I've also heard of the rolled seam at the base of the filter letting go & leaking.
In any case, pull the filter & check it's rolled seam at the base of the filter, it's gasket & the oil fiter casting & mounting suface for damage, in & around the filters mounting area & let us know what you find.
I have learned a very important lesson. Take nothing for granted even when doing a simple oil change. Make sure you inspect every replacement part before installing, even an oil filter. The filter I used at my last oil change had two gaskets attached and after about 1000 miles it finally burst at the seam. I use this truck mostly for cutting firewood and camping, happy this did not happen when I was up in the mountains 50 miles from nowhere.

Thanks for your knowledge, you guys nailed it!!
Glad to help. I learned the hard way myself, and chronicled it here. Have a read, it might make you feel better still.
you would be suprised how long a motor will run without oil. my friends and i ran a small block chevy out of oil and drove it around all night and we never could get it to quit. after we shut it off it never turned over again.
