Hey guys i've got a question. What exactly does the coffee can on the driver side inner fender do. I think it is to help w/ vaccum.
The reason I'm asking is that I am rebuilding the motor. While it is out I hope to clean up the engine bay a little and possibly get rid of the can. I just don't want to mess anything important up.
My 75 didnt have one but my 73 did.. I'm thinking that the models with things like Air Conditioning ... required the use of the canister, since those HVAC systems were vac. controlled.
Could be used in Disc brake setups as well... 73 has disc, 75 has Drums all around..
Its my logic working again..wrong or right who knows?
that can makes a good overflow for the radiater allso i moved it up next to the rad on drivers side and drilled a hole in the top and put the overflow line in it
My 78 has a coffee can on the passenger side up front right next to the battery. The truck never had a/c or cruise control, I might route the overflow tube to it but my overflow tube goes the other way.........
Most powerbrake boosters have a vacuum check valve to store vacuum. when you accelerate (mash the pedal) you lose manifold vacuum momentarly. Mainly the vac resivior keeps all of the ventilation partitions or forced air diverters from changing positions while accelerating. So if you decide to keep it, DO NOt let the vac advance tubing get plumbed into the canister vacuum.
The coffee canister is used for the climate control system. When you accelerate its there so when vacuum drops down your vacuum control motors that uses vacuum to open and closes the heat/ac/hot/cold/vent/blend doors in the penlum will stay in the setting it is and not close under acceleration. Also they werent for cruise control. Cruise control had its own system atleast mine has its own built in vacuum resivor.
If you want to have it look cleaner, Dennis mentioned the round ones used on cars and later pickups these are easy to find and can easily be mounted in place of the "coffee can" or you can buy aftermarket nice polished or brushed alum vac canisters from places like Jegs.
Yep you can get small or larger vacuum canisters that are aftermarket that will work fine. You can even get them with a vacuum gauge on it to let you know how much vacuum you have.
