does anyone know how the starter housing would chunk apart? it happened to me and it grinded up my fly wheel, 2 pieces came off of it 2 inches in diameter.

I have only seen that once before and that was because the engine had coolant in the cylinders and it had created so much pressure that when the starter tried to turn the engine over it couldnt do it and it shattered the housing for the starter.
When you roll it forward, you are moving the flywheel and that leads me to believe that maybe you have some teeth missing on it and somehow someway when your starter tried to engage is caught wrong over the broken teeth and that shattered it. There should be a small place where you can pull down a gaurd under the trans and you can have someone spin the engine over for you and watch the flywheel to see if you have broken teeth on the flywheel. If you do you should prolly replace that flywheel and put a new starter in and you should be good to go.
