New tires again!

I recently replaced my stock BFGs 265/70-17 with Cooper 33 x 12.50 x 17 load range D (max 50 psi). The new tires are actually only about 31 1/2 " tall x 11.5" wide measuring with tape measure. I am not impressed with the softer ride and my mileage has gone down from a bad 13 mpg to a terrible 11 1/2 mpg. Is this due to lower pressure or aggressive tread pattern? I am thinking about going back to an E load range or at least a D with a higher psi rating (65 psi Terra Grapplers). Maybe a 295/70-17 or 285/75-17. What do you guys think? My truck is '06 6.0 FX4 S-CREW. Thanks!

Your old BFG and new Cooper have similar diameters. The more aggressive tread and particulalry lower PSI definatley has an effect. I have gone through all kinds of tires in my companies superduties and based on my expereince and from the local tire supplier is the rated opinion:

1. Dick Cepek Fun Country II - Highly recomended (You can get 100,000km out of them no problem) I am on my second set at 70,000km with about 50% tread left remaining. I rotate them every 12,000km and occasionly spin my wheels to test if my aftermarket goodies are still working.

2. BFG A/T KO

3. Mickey Thompson ATZ or Pro-Comp Extreme A/T.

All the above in general are good for A/T tires for your consideration.

I do not have expereince with the Coopers but they seem similar to Nittos and I know a few friends say that Nitto's have poor tread life compard to the above tires listed.

Good Luck.

i got 52,000mi on my last set of nitto terra grapplers...and i am by no means friendly to my tires...and fuel mileage was relatively good at the time 17-20mpg. i wouldn't recommend the mud grapplers i have now for fuel mileage or economy. they are noisy as he!! and tend to walk around on you when towing.

Thanks for the input. I have dropped my truck off at the dealership today (before reading your responses) to have some TOYO open country all terrains put on. 285 70 17s. Load range E. 80 PSI Max. The tread is not as aggressive. Something I learned on the Coopers is the Maximum weight rating is only 2600 lbs. I was expecting more out of a D Range tire. I was told Toyo and Nitto are the same company. My wife's truck has the Nitto and we are happy with these. Thanks again.

What pressure were you running your tires at? I would think if you were running them at a psi of 50, that would be stiff for a ride. Dont let the max psi fool you, once you get over about 50 psi, it doesnt really change the ride much, its mostly for if you haul stuff. I would think the width difference in your 33 inch tires would have decreased your fuel mileage a tad. A 265 70 17 is about inch and a half or so narrower.

I take it you had the Cooper Mud tires. 2600lbs per tire is a little low. My 285/75/16 Dick Cepek FC-2s "D" are rated at 3250lbs at 65psi. The ride and grip was alot better than the stock 235/85/16 E. Every time I'd hit a bump with the stockers on it would throw me all over the place. I like my FC-2s, they have a bit of humm to them but bite good. Real aggressive tread can hurt mpg, but I think width is a major factor as well. I havn't heard anything bad about Toyos.

With the heavy 6.0 up front you would be better off with E rated tires.

Maybe the Coopers were a little taller than the older ones? This would give you lower mileage readings too if you didn't adjust your speedo.
Toyo's are good tires. I had good luck with my Michelin LTX M/S 16" tires before I went to 19.5" tires. Good wear tendencies. In fact I still have them and the stock wheels they came on collecting dust.
