I have an opportunity to pick up a rear axle complete from an 03 F350 super duty. Other than the obvious difference with the disc brakes, does anyone know if it will fit in an 86 F350 DRW pickup? The rear discs would be nice, and mine has a damaged bearing seat on one side at the inner race. Thanks.
Nice find. I do not know the spring perch width on the 86 but with little modification it will go under there. I believe that the pinion yoke is flange style, so you may look into that, and the new axles use a metric bolt pattern. Your old wheels will not fit the new axle. also the shock mounts are located differently, but the 03 uses a clamp style bracket that can be re-located to work. It will no longer have the stud that keeps it from rotating, but easily overcome with a little welding.
Nothing a little work can't fix. It is not a direct bolt for bolt install, but it would be a nice upgrade.
Ok, that answered the biggest question. I think I will pass on this. The rear is reasonable for what it is, $550 hub to hub with brakes. The added cost of 4 wheels, 16 wheel nuts and then the isssue of different front and rear rims, wait, make that 5 wheels and 1 extra tire raises it out off practical. What year did Ford introduce rear discs on the F350 dualies? Maybe I need to look for an earlier axle.
If I could find front hubs and rotors to match and weren't concerned about the change in offset (5.35" vs 5.0") I would definately consider it. It is at a junkyard a friend of mine just bought in Northern Newport News. I am not sure the price would be the same for anyone else though. Keep in mind that my truck is an 86 F350 and has the 10.25" rear end and still has the original king pins in front.
