Does anyone know of anyplace that makes rear disc conversion kits for a 1990 F150? It's got the 9" rearend, i think.. it's not any of the heavier duty ones... dana's, etc. Or, is there another axle that can swap in that has disc brakes on it? I've found a couple places online, but it seems that they only do C***y rear discs.
>Stainlesssteelbrakes.com makes kits for the 8.8 rear
>end.
I sent them an email requesting a price for the Ford truck kit, and they replied saying that they do not make a kit for that truck (90 F150). Oh, well... gotta keep looking! Thanks for the info, though.
I am looking for the same thing for my 89 Bronco. SS brakes were no help.I also checked svo and nothing there either. I have been told that a mid seventies lincoln rear end might get the job done. I have seen an article on it. It sounded quite involved and there wasn't any info as to how it worked out. I have been wondering if the lightning has rear discs. Do you know? My rear end is getting noisy and I would just as soon change it soon anyway. If you have found a solution I would really like to hear from you.
I don't think any of the older Lightnings have disc rears; I believe the newest ones do, though. Of course, the new ones wouldn't fit on an older truck (axle's too narrow). Other than that, I haven't found anything else that will fit the 8.8 (which I found out is what I have), but there are several for 9" rearends out there. Doesn't do me a whole lot of good!
I found an ad in the back of Off-Road, that sells the disk conversion starting at $264.95 pr. The address is: TSM
4321 Willow Creek Rd #7
Castle Rock, Colorado 80104-9766
Thier phone number is (303) 688-6882. I hope they have what you are looking for. Good Luck.
Slik, Who do you talk to at motorsports? The guy I spoke with a year or so ago said they only have a kit for the 4.5" bolt pattern. Mine seems to measure 5" on my 89 bronco. Can I change something or do they have a kit for the 5" now? Do you know anyone who has done this? My rear brakes are really bad-- after ajusting them they only seem to work for a week or to and then I am back to just the fronts. Really dicey on ice or a panic stop.
The conversion kit is listed in my "Ramchargers Performance Connection" catalog (888/293-7267) and states, "Rotors accept 5-lug 4.5" bolt pattern wheels." If your's are 5" (botl to bolt), then you would need to buy an adapter (would have to search that one) or upgrade to the newer pattern rims.
Thanks Slik;Do you know what years had the 4.5" pattern? Also does Ram Chargers have a website? I might consider changing the whole rear end if the gears will match. Thanks again for your time. T/snake
Ford Motorsport sells a rear disc kit for the 8.8 axle. It is Part #M-2300-G and is made for the ford 9 inch axle, but it also happens to fit the 8.8 truck axle housing (not mustangs) but doesn't fit the 8.8 truck bolt pattern. To make it fit, the rotors need to be re-drilled with the correct pattern, which by the way is 5 on 5.5" (not 5 on 5"), a task which any good machine shop can handle. The reason they don't have the correct pattern is because the kit was designed for the 9" car axles, but just happens to fit the 8.8 truck. Note from the FMS catalog: hoses, tubes, parking brake cables, and wheels are not included in this kit. Additional parts and machining may be required. Suggested retail: $379.95
This makes sense. Can motorsport supply the necessary extra hardware or are we on our own after that? By the way where is the best place to order from Motorsport? My local dealer is not a Motorsport dealer. They have been able to get most of what I needed in the past but I suspect I am paying the "long price". T/snake
Don't count on ford for the necessary extra parts because the kit really wasn't designed for the trucks. The steel fluid lines are easy enough to bend yourself. If you know of a good auto parts store, like a Napa, where the guys behind the counter aren't complete idiots (good luck), They can probably hook you up with hoses and cables that fit. Actually, the existing cables may even fit, who knows. The conversion uses a small drum setup inside the rotor for the park brake. Besides that, you shouldn't need anything else.
Summit Racing Equipment (1-800-230-3030)(www.summitracing.com) deals FMS parts, usually cheaper than the local dealer here in PA. Also try Jegs High Performance (1-800-345-4545)(www.jegs.com). Be sure to order a Motorsport catalog ($5.00) while your at it. The FMS Tech line (810-468-1356) can also assist you in finding a dealer.
