Obd-ii??

My 1996 F250 4x4 460cid E4OD ex-cab truck has a manufacture date of 03/96. According to the USDOT all vehicles built for sale in the US as model year 1996 or newer must comply with the OBD-II standards.

However, I cannot find an OBD-II connector on thing anywhere... I did find the old OBD-I (ECC self test) connector under the hood.

Anyone know if the 96 F250's were exempt from meeting the federally mandated requirement?

Just curious! Also looking to put my OBD-II tester to some use.

The heavy duty trucks didn't have to have OBD-II until later. I'm not sure exactly when, though. If you found the OBD-I connector, you definitely don't have OBD-II.

Yup, it was a GVWR requirement. PSD trucks were OBD2 from their intro in '94. I donno when the 460 trucks switched if at all.

All Ford trucks were OBD I in 1995 and 5.8 trucks over 8,500 GVW & 49 states & 7.5 trucks over 14,000 GVW & 49 states were still OBD I in 1997.
PSD were still OBD I & EEC-IV in 1996 but used the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester with a plug that was like the OBD II plug.
The PSD when to OBD II in 1997.

I have the OBDII in my 96, it`s just right of the ash tray under the dash. The truck is a F250 extended cab, 460 with a long bed.

96 F250, 460cid, 8800lb, build date 3/96, same as you. I have the connector under the center of the dash with a cap on it that says DATA LINK PORT. It hangs down and you can see it from the drivers seat. Definitely OBD2 the Xcal pulls codes from it no problem. Maybe its because its the Mass Air 460? They had them? Dunno.

Yours is not one of the 49 state trucks, it is a California Truck as stated in post #4 above.

CA may be different and probably did use true OBD-II a lot sooner, but for 49 states the PSD was OBD-I EEC-V in 1997. Even some of the 6.0's were still OBD-I. But they used the OBD-II connector and EEC-V computer. Same applies for many heavy duty gas engines up to the early 00's. Look at the emission sticker on a 97 PSD or even an early Super Duty and it'll say "OBD-exempt" or "OBD-I compliant" or something similar.

I just read over a document I found on a Ford website describing OBD requirements. Basically, for CA, all 1996+ gas vehicles up to 14,000 lb are required to have OBD-II, and diesels starting in the 1997 model year.

For 49 state trucks, all gas engines 1996+ under 8500 GVW required it. Beginning in 2004, vehicles over 8500 GVW will phase in OBD-II.

Read more about it here on page 3: Pretty interesting.
