Having problems starting my 93 that seems to get worse when it's warmed up. Have replaced solenoid switch three times in last six months but does not seem to last. It will start if I jump it across switch, most of the time but not all the time. Had starter, alternator, and battery tested and they all tested good. My mechanic mentioned once that it could be ignition switch. The first solenoid switch I replaced said I should replace ignition switch at the same time. I did not, could that be my problem? Anyone have any other suggestions?
What exactly is it doing? A click in the solenoid with no turnover? Slow turnover? Nothing? Mine will just click if it's really hot out or been running a long time, but always starts on second or third try. For me my problem is the cable from the battery is partially fried against the manifold, specifically the small wire that separates from the main cable and attaches at a separate point on the starter (302, auto tranny). I tried patching the wire, and it got better for a while, but I plan on replacing the whole cable. Check that cable to see if any section is fried.
Yes it just clicks. When it's hot it will not start at the key at all. I have to jump it across the solenoid switch with a wrench, but if it's hot I have to wait for it to cool off before that will even work.
sounds like a battery cable to me,and sometimes they can be coroded on the inside and you can't see it or maybe loose at a connection. check your negative cable,i also had the same problem on a 87 bronco 351.
goodluck,
There's always the neutral disabling switch. I had that go one time on an 86 E150, could always start her right up by connecting the points on the solenoid with a screwdriver, but nothing from the key.
