I have an 86 EB 351 4 barrel, it was a great deal, and so far I have no complaints about it, however, I do have some concerns. It appears to run rich, and I see no mixture screws, (a product of the 80s regulations I'm sure), so how do I lean it out some?? I've considered a K&N, I know that leaned my bike out a retarded amount, (I had to have the carbs worked), but I'm wondering just how much this Dynaspark dealybobber controls. I bought a code reader that says it does the 351 with MCU, but can't find the diagnostic connection for it. So to conclude, is there a good way to lean out my carb, and where is the damn diagnostic connection??
Any help appreciated,
PS, 4 different Ford mechanics gave me 4 different answers, and none of them were right.
There should be a place to install the screws on the carburetor to adjust the air/fuel mixture. And yes, this is a product of the 80s regulations. Anyway, if it is like an 80s GM Quadrajet, then you have to purchase a little kit which includes the special screws and springs. Then you have to drill the carburetor at two specific spots, which are marked, to uncover the holes for the mixture screws. I'm not sure where they are exactly on that carb, somewhere on the front at the base of the carb. There is just a little bit of metal covering the holes, you can actually punch them out. You just want to be careful not the hit the seat where the screw will touch, and ding it, because that can mess up the air/fuel mixture. But when you get the holes uncovered, you just put in the screws and springs, reinstall the carb, and then you can adjust the air/fuel mixture. You may as well rebuild the carb while you have it off too. This goes for GM's, I had to do this on an 84 Silverado once to get it to pass emissions. I'd think there would be something similar on your carb though.
well i'm guessing that your carb is a holley, and you plan on rebuilding it while you have it off, so if you are when you buy the kit it will have directions on how to drill out and adjust the air flow. you can also get you one of those haynes repair books, it tells you how to do it. you have to drill underneath the carb on the front side to get the caps off, anyway heres a web site, alldatadiy.com, and if you go to it for 24.95 a year you can have your own home mechanic anytime you want it. it will tell you how to fix anything on your truck, bumper to bumper, and it even gives you diagrams of what you need. i have a 87 bronco 351w ho with a holley four barrel which i rebuilt not to long ago, also your floats could need to be adjusted, well good luck,
Oh it was a rebuild, it was running so rich because the rear barrels were constantly leaking gas. It would flood itself when it was off, and leak into the carb when it was running, fixed now though, oh yeah the power valve was bad too.
