Still breaking in my 2002 SCrew, 5.4, 1000 miles on odometer. Just got 16.33mpg on a highway trip, carrying about 1000lbs of cargo and passengers. Good or bad? Will it improve after break-in? I expected better, but putting it down to break-in.
I wouldnt expect much more.. if you were empty and drove like a 100 year old guy. You might see around 20.
hell my 4x4 ranger i only get 16-18mpg (4liter)
Just talked to my Dad (owns 2002 S'crew 5.4L 4x4 Lariat about 4k on the odometer), says he's only avg 8-9mpg mainly city around suburban Denver. When he drove it to my place in Washington in August (about a 2400 mile round trip for my folks via Reno) he only got 15 mpg.
He's not a romper and always got decent mileage. He gets 38 out of a '91 Escort and I could only get 31 out of my '93 with the same engine/tranny.
My '00 S/C with a canopy gets 15 in mixed driving and got 14 before the canopy was put on. He's got a tonneau so the aerodynamics of the bed is a limited argument. I figure both weigh nearly the same now.
You get a vehicle and it doesn't always perform as expected... usually it's just a heavy foot, but I'm beginnning to wonder
I only get about 340 tank till the light has been on for a couple miles, about 20-30. I have a 3inch cat back and an air intake. I have come to the conclusion it is a 5.4 and that is the way it is.
Alot of the mileage will depend on the gear ratio. I had the 5.4l and 3.55 gears in my 2002 and have 3.73 in my 2003. The 2002 was between 17-18 mpg on average and the 2003 is right around 16 1/2 with 1000 miles on it.
