Look at the pedals, especially the brake pedal. Compare what you see to another vehicle with about the same miles. If the brake pedal in the truck is worn a lot more, then you probably have a rolled back odometer. The dealers call them "whipped" odometers.

Um, you're in CA - don't y'all have state emission inspections? And don't they have to record the mileage everytime it's inspected? Doesn't CarFax show evetime it's been inspected... and the mileage?
OK - I think I've said enough.

a pretty easy tric for the f series with analog odo is a cluster change out it takes less than 10 minutes & is virtualy un detectable the only way I know to tell is to examine the crumble paint on the main plug however I have run into some units with out this paint applied so its hit or miss if you suspect a issue just walk away you could be getting into a serious problem when its time for you to sell it

Again, like stated before, digital or analog, it is stored in the PCM. Also, I do not agree with hotroddsl, if it is a digital style the cluster does not hold the information, the PCM does. There is actually data that connects between the cluster and the PCM. If you hold the trip/mileage button while turning the truck on you can scroll through a list of menus that show the digital form of each analog gauge, gas, speedo, tach, temp, etc. If you hook the PCM up to the computer you can tell how many miles are on the truck. You can also verify the PCM with the vin number on the dash, and the number in the software. I don't care what truck it is, you can always tell if it has been rolled back with a little research.

I have a friend that has a 2000-f250 that has 54k miles on it, and he does drive it a fair amount, they are just all shorter in-town trips.

Just remember..anything is possible, its the just impossible that takes a little longer...

I was only refering to the analog style used from 99 to 2002 on xl's & sometimes xlt's its pretty common for unscrupulous wholesalers to pu worn out canadain trucks & install a scrrapyard cluster before a quick trip to the auction, I know I got burned on that scam once so allways ck out the door jambs for a import lable if so the speedo should be in km over mph. caveat emptor!

The swapout scam hotroddsl was talking about is where I was headed earlier, because we had a few of those make their way into our locale years ago.

This is getting interesting, though. I understand the concept of the mileage being accessible through the PCM, but are you saying that the PCM can actually have different data in there than what is on the analog odometer found in the cluster? That would make spotting these things a whole lot easier.

I have seen plenty of Canadian vehicles down here, especially when the exchange rate was a lot better. I had considered going to Canada to buy a few years back. I think a lot of the Canadian rental market cars end up down here, I had hired a gal once who worked at Sweetgrass MT and she said there was a company that swapped out the speedos.

But looking at these "Americanized" vehicles, I had never seen an import sticker in the jamb, just a sticker saying it was made for Canada.

Does the 2000 have the hour meters installed in them. If so, simple check to compare engine hours to milage..

Sometimes hourmeters arent a good way to measure it either. Say a guy idles his truck alot in the winter or whatever, that doesnt really make it accurate for the amount of mileage on teh rest of the trucks components.

My 2000 has 48,000 miles on it. and NO ROLLBACK

In fact it has 28 miles on it since January 1st !!!

Good idea to check the registrations as they usually require a mileage disclosure, especially if they're "smogged".
