Axle and gears

Hey guys,
Just purchased a '96 F-150 4.9. It's got a 6" lift with 37" tires on it, with a straight dana 44 in the front. My question is about the gears in the rear axle. Does anyone know what the stock gears are in the 8.8? 3.55? And how hard is it to swap them out with the 4.10? I assume I'd have to do the front along with the rear?

And any idea on rear axle upgrades in general, not sure how much the 8.8 enjoys the 37's.

Any input is extremely valuable!!!! Thanks!

From what i have seen most 4x4 F150's have 3.55's. To swap to 4.10's is easy oin the rear but the front is another story, you may have to change front carriers for numerically higher ratios and it can get expensive. Since you have a solid Dana 44 in the front, the ratios may have been changed.... Hope this helps.

i believe 3.73 is the breaking point for the solid axle d44. if you have a gear lower than that (numerically) and want to go to 4.10 you will have to replace entire carrier. 3.55 is standard for a 4wd, but you never know what it might have with the solid axle conversion done to it. you need to check the gears in both axles, and make sure they are the same. i'm pretty sure the solid d44 ratio was 3.50 not 3.55 but that little bit won't hurt anything. the 8.8 will be ok for the 37's for very light 4 wheelin. but if you are going to spend the money on gears i would find a heavier axle first. if you have 3.55 gears i would leave them alone til you find a heavier axle, having it geared high with the big tires will help ease the strain of the big tires, your get up and go just won't be very appealing. my advice is find a 3/4 or 1 ton axles from same year range, that way you will have the vss in the rear axle, if you have a stick shift and don't care about the speedo working you could bolt a 9in axle under truck very easily also. hope this helps.

Thanks for the help.

Bigger in the back sounds better, I may look into a d50 or 60.

For now, I may drop down to 35's and sell the 37's.

These axles shouldn't have any problems with 35's correct?

i've got 32's on mine, but haven't been offroad since i got truck. i plan on going to 35's when the current ones wear out. you shouldn't have any problems as long as you aren't rockcrawling or being abusive.
