Compressor repair

I was given a husky(wa650700) 26gal compressor. The pump is toast.
I found a new pump/motor asm for it for about $150 but I was thinking about putting a better pump on it. Is this possible?

The sticker on the machine sais it has a 5.5hp motor but i don't know if that is max hp or constant hp or if it even makes any differance.

anyway the stock pump is a 5.1cfm @ 90 psi oil-less and I found a 3hp 8.2cfm @ 90psi oiled pump(single stage 2 piston) at northern. does anyone know of any issues with puting this pump on? I don't care about being able to put the stock motor/pump plastic cover on the machine.

Thank you

If you search this thread for air compressors, you find a few good reads. Good probability you have a 5.5 peak hp motor. A true 5 hp motor runs on 240 and draw upwards of 20 amps, it will also pump in excess of 15 cfm at 90 psi.
To upgrade the pump you need to have a motor that will drive it. Also check the drive speed(rpm) of the pump.

It might be worth something as a storage tank, these cheaper tanks usually are not worth fixing unless with used parts. Especially by bolting on something more powerful. The tubing is small, the cams are custom, the cooling wheel only fits the OEM pump and is plastic, etc. The cut off switch (!) will not work with the newer one etc.

Thank you

I ended up spending $115 on a repalcemnet motor and pump (one unit part number). It's my first compressor and I only plan on usung it to take off bolts and fill tires. For now. When it brakes again I'm not fixing it.

The motor is/was a 5.5hp Peak. It was dark out when I first looked at it and missed the small print...

I'll be geting a better compressor when I get a raise and/or save up for a better one.
