I've got a '92 F-150 XLT in need of some new tires. I guess my question is, what sort of tires should I get if I'm kind of unsure how long the truck is going to last? It runs fine right now, but who knows in the future. How much should I expect to pay for a good tire? Any advice on what kind of tire I should look at?
Tires are kind of a personel choice thing....everybody will prefer one type over another. It's more of how much do you want to spend?Do you want raised white lettering or blackwall, aggressive tread for 4-wheelin or milder tread for city driving. Head down to your local tire shop and check some out and price them.
I just put some Goodyear "snow" tires (what the dealer called them) on my 94 F150 for $75 each. I'm using this truck for a wood hauler, etc, so I didn't much care what they looked like. They have a mild aggressive tread, look decent.
Consider used ones. Be picky. I bought 4 Hancook tires for my '92 f150 for $150 off of craigslist.com. They still had the little nubs on the tread. They retail for $80 each. Saved $170. But, don't forget it costs $10-$20 each to mount and balance and install valve stems. Some tire dealers do this for free with the purchase of new tires. Good luck
Another stupid question....if the wheels are factory, what tire size should I be looking for? I imagine I could probably just read it off the sidewall....
don't be cheap with tires even if you think the truck might die before you run out of tread, you can always keep the tires for something else. don't compromise your safety to save a couple of bucks. used tires are a crap shoot, there are lots of quality tire makers, even the off brands are made by the same companies as more popular ones. i bought tires a few years ago for my wife's car. can't remember the brand name on them, but they were actually made by michelin. they were $65ea rather than $100 for a known name, but still quality. used tires were taken off another vehicle for a reason. just my .02 you didn't memtion where 2wd or 4wd, preppy is probably right about the size for a 2wd, but you can always go up at least one size from whatever factory was with no problems. any good tire store will have a list of the factory size and optional sizes to fit your truck.
