Sorry if something similar has been posted before (please direct me to a link if it has) but I can't figure out my Bronco.
I have a 1988, 302 that's been really loud lately, like it's sucking air in somewhere at a huge volume and really causing the engine to run like crap. It sounds simple enough, but I can't find anything. Add to that the fact that I'm only a weekend warrior when it comes to this stuff, and it's easy to see how I can miss something simple. I don't see any major hoses loose, and there are no other noises, like valves clapping or anything like that. I can't identify which side the noise is coming from very easily, and when you hit the gas, it'll stumble, then get idling like normal again. She'll only top out at 50mph too.
Like I said, sorry it's such a broad question, but any ideas to get me started again?
Sounds like a major vacuum leak. Try a can of carb cleaner and spray it around vacuum connections. If you have a carb, spray around the base of it. When the idlew picks up, you have found a vacuum leak.
Had a similar problem with my 89 302. The EGR valve went bad.
To test:
Let the engine cool.
Remove the EGR valve.
Plug hole on intake with finger or thumb.
Have a helper start the truck.
With it pluged it should run fine.
If it runs fine when you test it is, the egr valve is your problem. If no difference I would look for vacuum issues.

check the hose going from your intake to your brake master cylinder. It's a major vacuum! Very loud when disconnected. I doubt its disconnected but there might be a leak in the hose.
I'll check on both of these things and let you know. I should be able to get into it this weekend, but in the meantime, I'll try anything else as well.
I'm pretty sure it's not the brake booster hose, as that's the first one I checked, but I know I've missed obvious things in the past...I'll double check.
If it was your brake booster hose, I'd think you'd notice a difference in the brakes.
This may be an obvious or stupid question but I have to ask since it is the biggest vacume on your 302.....your hoses from the air filter box to the throttle body are on right?
Other than that, I agree with Mike B 88 as far as the carb cleaner goes.
Hit all your vacume connections with that and when it races, you've found your leak.
That's all I can see right now without any other information.
Well, i tried the TB cleaner but got nowhere, and I didn't really have time to tinker with the EGR, but get this...
My old man drives it now, and he said he was driving, and she was chugging along like normal when all of a sudden, after a thump-like noise and shudder I guess, she just went ABO on him. That sucking-air noise stopped, and she runs like a bear now.
It's good too, because my current daily driver is giving me fits...nice to know that at least one of the cars is going to cooperate.
Still no idea what it could've been though other than some sort of blockage. Weird, but she's back to her old self again.
Thanks for giving me some ideas in the meantime though fellas.
