Fuel Filter Problem

I got a tool to help replace the fuel filter. We got one side disconnected with no problems. the front of the old filter had been squeezed by a pair plies and no matter what we did we can't get the tool to fit to release the filter.

Any suggestions?

Sometimes tou can use a small pocket type screw driver to pry the prongs loose if you can access them.
