Fuel filter removal tool
i want to change my fuel filter.. i guess it's a good thing to do and maybe it'll save me chaning a fuel pump and i'm kinda hoping it might solve a bit of my fuel consumption problem.. problem is i got under my door and found the thing but it's all stuck on there with salt and rust and ##### so i squirted it with lots of WD-40 and went on to the site for advice and now i hear i need this special tool... well i went to canadian tire and looked at the tools.. they had a whole aisle full of generic looking specialty tools for brake work and other special maintenance etc. but i couldn't find anything specifically called a fuel filter tool.. so does this thing have a special name or a part number.. tahnx

I have sat here for 10 minutes trying to remember what those rings are called - - The tools you need are round with a slot in the side where they can slide around the filter line. They come in a pack of like 10 - all different sizes. You match up the one that fits, slide it over the line, and push it in to release the clasp on the line. Then pull out the filter from the line. Sounds easy, but it can be a pain in the a$$...
If I remember the name or find it on a site, I'll post it...
Good Luck!!!

Fuel filter removal tool
My Dad had to buy one those tools for my sisters explorer. He got it at the local auto part store (Advance Auto or Auto Zone). Just ask the part desk people they should help you.
My buddy and I attemted to change his fuel filter on his '96 F150 and we didn't know that we had to have a tool. We got it off anyway, about 2 hours later. It kind of pissed us off when we found out that we had to buy a stupid tool to remove a sticking fuel filter. Im used to just undoing the o-clamps on my '79 F150.

Like every other thing you want to fix on a explorer, it needs a special tool. They are called spring lock tool. You can find them at just about any major auto parts store, just tell them what you are doing, they should know what you need. The filters are supposed to last the life of the vehicle, so your problems are probably elsewhere.
Good luck!
