Color sanding

What exactly is "Color Sanding"? I have seen this term thrown around for years, especially in truck magazines. I can understand sanding enamel or lacquer to get a color match; but why would you need to do a base coat/clear coat that way?

Think its still left over from the old single stage days, when you actually did sand color. And when lacquer was in, it had to be sanded and buffed to get good gloss out of it. When most people refer to colorsanding, they are normally refering to sanding the paint job after painting with fine papers to remove imperfections like dirt nibs, orange peel, ect prior to buffing back out the scratches, hopefully leaving you with a nice flat mirror image without imperfections. The term never really left or changed, even though single stages are used far less then clear is today. I always just say wetsand the clear, as its what is mostly used today, and never heard anyone say clearsanding. Although saying wetsanding the clear prior to buffing wouldn't necessarily be accurate either, as some do this with a palm sander and special pad and papers dry.

I have wet sanded the color before clearcoating on black and wow what a difference it made.
