I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, 4X4, automatic with about 140K miles on it. The other day it would not start. I got a jump, and it started, it was a little rough at first, but smoothed out. When I got home, I let the truck idle in the driveway to recharge the battery. I came out the next morning, and it would not start again.
My first thought was that the alternator was shot. So I pulled it, had it tested, and sure enough it was shot. Installed the new one, had a friend provide a jump and it wont turn over.
What I have done:
- replaced the faulty alternator
- chraged the battery via jump
- used MAC tools ProCode reader to look for error codes and came back with all passed.
- I have checked the fuel cutoff switch and that did not need to be reset
What is working:
- Starter engages and attempts to turn engine over
- Spark plugs are getting a charge
- Battery has enough power to run everything else (lights, radio, etc)
My only thought now is that is has to be something to do with fuel delivery to the engine. Has anyone out there run into similar problems or know if I am missing some little quirk related to the Ford 4.0L SOHC V6?
I have checked the fuel shutoff, and it was not tripped. That was our initial thought as to why the truck would not start the first time. I was parked at a shopping center and we thought someone may have bumped my truck while I was inside. We checked it again after installing the new alternator. So I am positive that the fuel shutoff is not an issue.
Redwing, that did it. I went to the local autoparts store this morning, got a low amp charger, left it on there for a while. When it read "Full Charge" the engine turned right over. THANKS!
