1929 - 1942 was when ford used their Green engine color.
Not sure about the other years. Im trying to figure out if my engine was painted dark blue or light blue since its a 1978 year model. The dark blue looks too dark compared to the orignal engine paint but the light blue is too light.
What years for the colors, Bill? Inquiring minds want to know.Pete
Ford used to publish a booklet on engine colors (just try and find one, I haven't). When the first OHV engines were introduced, many mechanics couldn't tell one from another, so Ford started painting engines one color, valve covers another. The color of the valve cover related to engine size. That's why Ford published the booklets, which were sent to dealers parts departments, then given away to garages and body shops. Ford engines were usually painted one color, Lincolns another, Mercurys had their own colors as did Edsels. Trucks were different too. Mindboggling. Many of these older engines have been repainted Ford Blue, which is incorrect prior to 1967. Most V8 engines were painted black from roughly 1961 thru 1966-7. Prior to 1961, your guess is as good as mine when it comes to which color went where, and on what.
I remember touring the Norfolk assembly plant many years ago and it seems the flathead V8s were green or red, one color denoting car engines the other truck engines. I also remember the colored valve covers, particularly on the big block engines.
Thanks, guys. The reason I'm wondering is that I've got a .060 over '74 block, '69 headed project that is ready for assembly, and picked up some Duplicolor engine ceramic paint #DE1621 "Old Ford Blue". I primed and sprayed the heads just to check it out, and I like it. I'm really not too concerned with it being exactly correct, just close. Great info as usual, Bill. And Bill.
