auto locking hub ?

auto locking hub ?

i have a 97 f250 psd with the original auto locking hubs. my problem is lately when i use four wheel drive and disingage it stays in four wheel for a few miles.now it seems to be getting worse.any idea whats going on?.im thinking i will have to put manual hubs on but they are kinda nice.one other ? what engages and disengages the hubs? thanks

many times with the auto hubs it requires some time or even back up in 2wd to disengage. also the turning of the axle shaft is what engages the hubs. they may need to be removed and greased so they work like they used to. or they may just be worn out and need replaced.

Yep, what Tim said^^. Don't pack them with a lot of grease, nice light coating will do it.

Auto hubs was the 1st thing broke on my 96...and the first to upgrade, w/ manual Warn hubs. As soon as I got them apart I knew they were going in the trash. Very light weight IMO. I don't need to lock/unlock them often enough to need Auto lockers. Up here in the frozen north I lock them at first snow and unlock them when the weather breaks (Mar, Apr).

I have to put mine in reverse and go back and forth about two to three times to get them to unlock. I agree they are handy and user friendly. But as I understand they are very weak, and if you do any serious work with them they are apt to break.
