The side view mirror on my 90 XLT would not stay in position and was flopping all over the place and needed to be replaced. I got a replacement mirror head at Wal Mart. Shame on me for thinking that the $9.99 mirror would be even close to adequate! The stock mirror was so much better (before it wore out). First, even when it is adjusted, I can't see much out of the replacement head. Worse, it vibrates like crazy, and finally I have to adjust it every day. My stock mirror was definitely worn out, and needed replacing (it was worn out where the ball is and just hung there all crooked). But this is not much better. Is there a place to buy a decent replacement head, or do I need to see the dealer or the boneyard?
I got some thru a friend with a body shop, for my "old" explorer, cause some punks busted them up while it was parked (and stole my kc lights offa the rack),
mirrors were aftermarket but real close to OEM, were like 35 bucks each I think, were same as originals as far as I could tell, maybe local body guy can hook you up without wearing his mask?
My '90 Bronco's driver side mirror has the same problem. O.E.M. versions are still the best, but these will be expensive getting them via a Ford dealership. You can always try a local parts warehouse...or even a junkyard.Usually ones found there show some wear, but they'll be less expensive.I really should replace my left side mirror, too.I thought about trying a local Pep Boys store.Good luck in your search.
I looked at Pep Boys, and I don't think the mirror there would be any better than Wal Mart's. I wouldn't recommend the aftermarket mirrors found in stores, after my experience with this one. I'm going to try the junkyard. I don't care if it's got some wear on it, as long as I can see out of it.
I just saw today,on e-bay, a set of swing out mirrors for '80-'91 trucks. The bid on them was $20.Maybe you could check them out on e-bay? I figure I'd tell you about them, anyway.
I checked out the auction. It is for both left and right, heads and swing aways. I only need the passenger side mirror head, so this auction will probably exceed what I want to spend, and plus postage will be high. But still, I am going to keep my eye on it. There is a junkyard that has a lot of trucks near my house, and I am going to go over there on Saturday and see if they have the mirror, as well as a power door lock actuator and the switch that controls the rear window from the dash (mine works but you have to press it real hard, and sometimes even then it does not work). I'll let you know what I come up with. And thanks for the eBay tip!
This appears to be a somewhat common problem. My passenger side mirror has this same problem. I talked to a dealer and the mirror and swingarm would cost around $85. I will be checking the junkyard soon.
