Quick Oil Change Question

Quick oil change question. I am getting ready in a few hundred miles to do my first oil change on my 07 SCAB. I just did a recon of the area around the filter and I have the cup filter wrench already, I do not anticipate any issues removing the filter for the first time.

Looking at the plastic oil catch tray under the filter, it looks like instead of the oil running down the tray and into the bucket, it will pool in the tray first until it over fills the upper portion of the tray first, then it will overflow and then run doen the tray into the bucket.

Needless, to say it looks like once the oil is finished there will still be a pool inside the tray that will have to be soaked up and removed. Seems to me this is going to be just as messy as letting the oil just run down.

What do some of you do when you do your changes? Did the oil in fact pool in the tray and was it exessively messy? Any tip and or tidbits will be appreicated.

Thanks

I put down cardboard and make sure I have some kitty litter handy. It's always a mess.

When I did mine, I was curios about the same thing. When I loosened the filter the oil ran down the front and also went out a slot in the back of the tray and dripped right through the hole in the skid plate. It was perfect, there was very little oil left in the tray and I just ran a rag over it and that was it. Didn't really make a mess at all. Maybe I just got lucky the first time, who knows. The filter was such a PITA that I was pleased with the draining part of it. Good Luck!!

take it to the dealer for the 1st oil change. you'll be very glad you did. but yeah, the oil didn't make a big mess like my 302 did. It went straight through the skid plate and I think I use about 1, maybe 2 rags to clean it all up.

have fun...

I armed myself with that cup type wrench I ordered, in fact from tips and posts right off this forum. I mated it up with the FL820 and looks like it is going to bite just great. I have got to do the first oil change myself sort of bust my cherry you know. I may cuss later, but I'll do it just the same.

I don't have the FX4 and no skid plates so it should be a snap according to the last couple of posts....lets hope so.

If you got the "cup type wrench" that will fit the new Motorcraft filter then it won't fit the one from the factory unless you "make it fit". Just so you are aware that the filters are different. I don't know why, it looks like ford would put the same ones on at the factory that you buy in the store.
