question

I just bought a 99 F-350 crew cab 4x4 w/ the 7.3 psd. It has "D" rated (8 ply) tires and the max press. on the tire is only 55 psi. I am getting a lot of tire nose (Cupping). I will be towing a 10,000 lb fithwheel.

1. Should'nt this truck have "E" rated (10 ply) tires capable of holding more press?

2. Can I put the "D" rated tires on my 01 F-250 super cab 4x4 with a 5.4 ?

Thanks

Not sure what the F-350 came with back then, but I'm pretty sure that the 250 and 350 all come with E rated tires now. If it was me, I would put E rated tires on both of the trucks whether they needed them or not. I'm a firm believer in "you can never have too much". You definately dont want to have a tire blowing out on you, especially if your carrying alot of weight. Happened to my uncle once and it tore the crap out of his truck bed and the front of his trailer.

stick with a tire that is greater than or at least equal to the weight rating for the original tires. (This should be printed on the sidewall) Especially if you are towing a large load.

My 01 5.4 came with "E" rated, I am sure the 350 came with E,s but It has brand new D,s on it. The 250 needs tires and I would rather have E,s on the 350 with the PSD. I hate to buy 8 new tires. With the 250 having the 5.4 and not towing would the D,s be safe?

The D's will be fine if you are not towing or hauling big loads. I.E. if you are just putting folks in the truck, you'll be fine.

I think Hi Ho has the right idea. Weight carrying ability is dertermined by a number of factors, ply rating & size being 2 of them. In other words, it's possible to have 8 plys that have a better weight carrying ability than 10 ply tires. It all amonuts to how much air volume you have - a bigger 8 ply will likely have a higher weight carrying ability than a smaller. You really need to look at the load capacity (in pounds) listed on the tire itself. I had 8 plys with a load capacity suitable for full loading of my F350 so I know it is possible.

???? Not sure what you mean by that.

My BFG AT/KO's at 305/70/16's are D rated at just a hair under 3,000lbs each at 50 PSI. That's a lot of carrying weight. Much, much more than most trailers (travel trailers or 5th wheels) will be putting back there.

what msgtg meant was that the load range D's are good if hes only using it to tow light stuff.

Thanks for the input. I will only be towing a 17' aluminum bass tracker and my utility trailer with the 250. The 350 will tow my tractor and fith wheel.

My 350 came with D's, and I am running them till they are bald. I pull 40 foot fivers on a regular basis and it's ok. I would never buy anything but E's, but the tires came with the truck.

so the only difference between D and E is the 8ply vs the 10 ply?

What concerns me is the 55psi max press. With the 7.3 you can see the weight in the tires. I have not been back out to look at the weight rating but I think they will be fine for light towing with the smaller engine.
