Adding coolant gauge

In an article written by Kirk Space in the Articles Section of the site, Kirk states that on his 1999 V10 there is a "plug" on the upper front intake manifold where he added his Autometer sender...

I have looked high and low on my 2000 V10 and cannot fnd this plug... Can anyone add anything to this or perhaps supply a photo as to just exactly where this I can "tap" into the motor with my coolant sensor???

Just a thought for you. When I wanted to add a trans temp gauge to my 150 I found that good quality parts were going to cost me nearly $240, plus my time to install. I bought an Edge Evolution tuner/LCD gauge for $320 and within 5 minutes I had more information than I could ever use, plus a tuner to firm up the shifts.

When I put in my autometer water sender, I put it in the block, on the driver side towards to back. There is a water jacket plug installed there from the factory. You have to have a large allen wrench to get it out, and coolant will go everywhere, even if you drain the radiator. You have to buy a water jaket extension from autometer.

Above is the link for the extension you will need. Hope this helps...

Thanks for all the comments... I believe the factory sender is located on the passenger side front of the motor... Could one add a t-fitting there and install the sender there in lieu of the freeze plug location??

Also, to verify location of the factory sender, if I remove the connector from the sender while the motor is running, will I kick up any errors in the computer or cause a check engine (MIL?) light???

Les,

Adding a T fitting to the factory sending unit is just asking for leaks. Not to mention all of the pipe nipples and fittings you would need to plumb in the aftermarket mechanical sender. The location I advised you about is not a freeze plug. It is a threaded plug that plugs an un-used water jacket access hole. The extension from autometer is threaded to fit this hole and also to accept the water temp sender from your new gauge. Use this method and your installation will be a breeze!

The autometer sender came with two adaptors... I assume that these will work just like the one you suggested???

Unfortunately, no. I thought the same thing when I purchased mine, but the sender is too long, and that is what the piece refrenced above is designed to accomodate. For me it meant waiting another week for it to come in the mail, but well worth it when you have an install that doesn't leak and will last as long as the truck.

OK - thanks 4ton... I'll order the adaptor from Autometer right away so I have it when I install the gauge... Right now I'm in the midst of wiring my 4 gauge pod... When done, I'll have aux fuel gauge, trans temp, coolant temp, and diff temp... I haul a #9400 travel trailer so I like to keep an eye on things... My 2000SD 4X4 SB (3:73LS)also has a full Banks Power Pack with Trans Command and OttoMind...

Thanks for all the help...

It is where the blue annodized nut is towards the middle. That is the oil filter below and to the left, and the driver side exhaust to the right. This is looking through the driver wheel well.

Looking from the bottom

Another through the drivers wheel well.

Hope this helps!

Haven't gotten that far yet... Had to pick up the travel trailer from the dealer this weekend and was working on the TT all weekend long dewinterizing and such...

The 4 gauge gauge pod went in very nicely - right now, the trans temp and aux fuel gauge are the only two that are hooked up... Now that you have been kind enough to snap a few picks, engine coolant is next and then diff temp... But before I do diff temp, I have to order the Magna-Tek diff cover that has the hole for the sender as well as the drain... My stock Ford diff cover has neither...

Thnaks a lot 4ton, I really appreciate the photos!!

Finally finished!!

99 3/4 ton,

A little update... Finally got the temp sender installed - right where you said it would be... That adaptor I got from Summit did not fit my sender so I installed it with the stock AutoMeter sender 1/8 NPT with the supplied adaptor...

I also bought and installed the Mag-Hytek diff cover which enabled me to add the AutoMeter sender to it as well... If I can figure out how to post pictures on this site, I'll post a few of the installations of the Mag-Hytek diff cover, the sender install for coolant and the 4 gauge pod setup...

Thanks for all the help guys - couldn't have done it without you

Still more info

Wired up the sensor to the gauge earlier this evening and took the truck for a ride... Gauge read 180 after truck got up to temperature as shown on stock gauge in dash... Sounds about right to me... Ambient outside temp was about 78 degrees or so...
