Well, the problem is now it wont start. Ive got an 86 f150 with a 300 six, and it just wont start. i was out in some real shallow clay and i guess the power steering didnt like that and popped the cap off, spraying fluid, and slipped the belt off. well i stop to check what happend and when it stopped it chugged down, and let out two big pops. run into walmart, get some fluid filler up,fires right up, starts running like normal. drive probally 5 miles back to the house. after i stop, it chugs down pops again. now it just wont start up. when i got it two weeks before, i replaced the cap/rotor, battery, plugs, wires, rebuilt the carb. when i got it it was hard to start, turns out it was the timing, but i never got the chance to hook it up to a timing light. any ideas? thanks
Start over, and make sure you have spark and fuel.
that and also go to Autozone "or any place you can have the module checked" and see if its passing all of its test. My 351M did all of that and replaced plugs, wires, hole distibutor, fuel filter, ignition switch, then went to autozone and talked to a pro "im only 14, my truck goes on my budget/ what i can afford" and it only passed 2 out of 5 fields, 1 was not letting spark get to the coil. Your truck still turns over right, just no fire? I would just go down to the Local Autozone/parts store where they can test you module. its just 3 bolts anyway. Have fun and hope this helps you from my dum mistakes.
Turn the engine by hand till the timing marks on the front pulley line up. Take the dist cap off, and see if the rotor is pointed to #1 sparkplug wire. If it's not, turn the engine one revolution, and line the marks up again. See if the rotor is pointed to #1. If it's not pointed to #1 in either position, then your phenolic timing gear may be stripped.
