Ive got a 65 f100 long bed, currently with the original 300 in it ( 349,000 miles!). I' going to be given a 70 f250 with a 390/c6 combo, but it will need a new tranny. I also have the opportunity to pick up a 351 cleveland, and c6 out of a 71 cougar.
Which would I be better off with?? I'm not going to haul anything with this truck, Its just for the street, and I want to be able to back up the sticker in my back window that says" The Surgeon General never said anything about smoking a chevy"!
IIRC, the 351c was a rather high compression motor, and might have problems on todays gas. Whereas that 390 will most likely run on horse wiz. I do know that the 390, if the internals are in good shape (rings etc) can wake up very nicely with a 4 barrel carburetor and a set of headers, and make more torque than the 351. Which, of course, is useful if you ever plan on using your truck as a truck. If the 4 barrel and headers are put on the 390, I can tell you it would not be slow!
What kind of cleveland? 2V or 4V and that 390 would be nice. Personally neither cause I would want a fuel injected 302H.O. Good fuel econonmy and power. Makes a really nice engine to go fast with since your not hauling anything it would be perfect.
