Rain gutter Rust and repair.

Quick question. The sealant/seam sealer that the factory put in the window rain gutter pulled away from the body. As a result I have roof rust I have to repair. Plan on making some small patch panels for the roof, and most likely brazing the gutter itself. My question is anybody else have this problem, and what did they replace the sealant with? Some sort of marine compound? Want something that will last perferably as long as the 40 year factory stuff.
Thanks.

Welcome to the club- there are lots of Slicks out there with rusty rain gutters! I imagine body shop suppliers probably sell the right putty, and I know that Eastwood carries various types of body sealant.

Hppydrunk,

I have that rotten gutter condition on my 66 slick, I decided to "shave" it off.
New trucks don't have it so I figure it is not needed. Just my 2 cents worth.

Most of the rust comes from the inside and rusts outward. Condensation collects on the inside of the roof and then runs down into the joint. To prevent rust out make sure the joint is sealed well from the inside as well.

I welded in a stainless steel patch panel that I made.

Has anyone tried brazing or welding the seam? I was thinking of trying that. Have to replace the putty in the gutter anyway. Not sure it is needed either.

I've wrestled with the thought of shaving it off. I'm trying to keep it's appearance stock though. With the exception of the 79 chassis, and 460. I too am contemplating brazing it. I remember some stuff in eastwood, but can't find it now. I've seen some stuff at a marine supply store that sounded like it may work. The gutter is still mostly intacted, a few small holes. The roof has more damage. I'm still looking, think I could squirt some por 15 or something in the roof area after it's fixed?

Mine is the same way- rusted above the gutters. I thought of maybe welding in some patches behind it, then leveling it w/ filler. Or I may just sand blast it to bright metal, then fiberglass it from the inside. My truck isn't really worth going to extremes for. Probably the best fix is to find a clean roof on another truck, cut it off, and weld it on to your truck. Don't know where you're gonna find a clean roof, though!

I just finished that same project about a month back. It wasn't easy in some spots but you can do it. As much as I can't stand body filler I had to use it for some of the small pin holes between welds. Being that I am far from a welder it turned out really well. If you want make a trip by sometime this weekend if you want to see the end results.

I'm in L.A. right now, but I'm always interested at looking at trucks. I got a couple welders, and already patched one side. The main thing I'm unsure about is what kind of seam sealer to use, and if I should braze the gutter itself or not. Think brazing would be easier then trying to weld that area. Other than that my trucks rust free.

I thought of grinding out all the rust then leading the gutters. What do you think?

I was going to do the lead thing too. but speaking with a body man he said just to grind all the rust out and use something called monkey hair which is fiberglass mixed with long hair fiber and thatts what I did I filled out the rain gutters completely they look like factory but there is no channel. I used this everywhere the roof was rusted then from the inside between the panels filled it with expanding foam. made it even a little more sound proof.

My plan as of now is Braze the gutter, weld the roof topcoat, then fill gutter with 3M marine sealant, than paint whole truck. I don't like using fiberglass for body rot unless it were a corvette. Lead is something I hadn't thought of hmmm? Thanks.
